How the math works
You never need a whole bitcoin
Bitcoin divides into 100,000,000 sats (short for “satoshis,” after bitcoin's creator), and you can hold any number of them. Five dollars, twenty dollars, a hundred — every amount buys some exact number of sats. Converting is: divide your dollars by the bitcoin price, then multiply by 100,000,000.

Why does the number of sats per dollar change?
The sats-per-bitcoin number is fixed forever, but the dollar price of bitcoin moves all day. When the price goes up, each dollar buys fewer sats; when it dips, each dollar buys more. That's why this page pulls a live price instead of using a stale one.
